What are Specialty Finishes?

Finishes are what we apply in the final stretches of a manufacturing or construction process, and serve as the top surface in floors and walls. They have the ability to protect surfaces from water, impacts, abrasion, corrosion, frost, and more. Specialty finishes can be used decoratively, too. If you’re looking for a unique way to transform how your business looks, call Painter Bros. We can dramatically change the look and space of your business to provide it with more personality. We offer a wide range of painting services that utilize various tools, paints, and techniques.

Why Choose Specialty Finishes?

If your business experiences a lot of foot traffic, be sure to choose a specialty finish that will provide it with a multi-dimensional look, more personality, and a unique upgrade. Industrial businesses also have particular needs when it comes to safety, durability, regulations, and compliance. Many of these needs can easily be met through industrial finishes, depending on their requirements. High-performance coatings can provide a wide array of textures, colors, and finishing types that can meet even the most demanding environmental conditions.

Types of Specialty Finishes

CMU Coatings

These are versatile and environmentally friendly finishes used for a wide range of applications. CMU coatings can be used in exterior designs and in interior walls.

Lacquer

A lacquer finish is a clear, hard finish that enhances the beauty of the flooring where applied. Despite its beauty, lacquer is susceptible to scratches and doesn’t hide imperfections. You will need to be sure the floor is perfectly smooth before application.

Polyurethane Coating

A polyurethane coating is highly flexible and is more resistant to scratches. This is why you will find this particular coating in areas of heavy traffic, such as multi-level parking garages.

Varnish

These are clear, transparent liquids that can be applied to add a layer of protective coating to various surfaces. You will want to choose a varnish such as a waterborne finish that will protect your floors for a while.

Powder Coatings

Powder coating is a dry coating process used as a metal finish mostly on industrial equipment. They provide high-quality finishes that look great and provide solid functionality. They are applied as dry powder, then cured with heat.

Elastomeric

Elastomeric coating is used for exterior walls or roofing and is much thicker than paint. This kind of coating has the capacity to become stretched to a minimum of twice its original length with the ability to go back to its original dimensions.

Acrylic

Acrylic coatings can be used in architectural or decorative finishes, as well as waterborne, organic solvent-borne, powder, or radiation-curable formulations. They are best used to coat industrial goods, as well as build thick layers of paint.

Epoxy

To protect surfaces and pipelines, as well as sealing warehouse floors, an epoxy surface coating can be used. They are also great for protecting against decay and corrosion, making them one of the most widely used finishes for industrial purposes.

Siloxane Clear Coat

These are thermal-cured materials that provide a glassy appearance, along with a hard and rigid surface. It can additionally be used to seal brick and masonry and prevent water damage.

Oil-based Glaze

A glaze can be applied once a base coat has dried — the advantage of an oil-based glaze to a water-based one is that it won’t easily come off through water and soap. These are mostly used to provide a translucent finish for walls.

Venetian Plaster

This is a wall and plaster finish that consists of plaster combined with marble dust. It is then applied through a trowel or spatula in many layers. These are especially useful for walls and ceilings.

Grit Coating

This is used for the application of protective thermal spray coatings. The surface is prepared so that the thermal sprayed coating bonds and adheres through grit coating. It is best used to modify or clean the surfaces of materials or to remove rust, paint, scale, or sand.

Specialty Finishes for Businesses

If you’re wondering how people choose a business to support and patronize without knowing much about it at first glance, the answer is quite simple. People tend to be attracted to businesses that have a unique, vibrant, and fresh look. When people walk into a store, they tend to stay longer when the ambiance is welcoming and easy on the eyes. You can achieve this for your business through specialty finishes. Below are just a few examples of how different businesses can use specialty finishes:

Office settings can opt for flat or matte finishes. These easy to apply and affordable options will leave your walls with a sophisticated look. Unlike most finishes, these will absorb light and spread it throughout your office.

Restaurants can benefit from metal, concrete, and wood paneling. Any of these choices will offer beautiful aesthetics that create the appearance of a larger and more open space. They are also suitable to be used in feature walls, floors, and columns, along with entry areas and exterior facades.

Industrial settings will need to look for powder coating. These come with various benefits such as high durability and affordable prices. In addition, ours are safe to use and are American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) compliant and certified.

Frequently Asked Questions About Commercial Specialty Finishes

To achieve a metallic look, this will require the right materials when painting a room. This will include the following:

  • Tarps
  • Spackling
  • Paint rollers
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paint trays
  • Painter’s tape
  • Primer
  • Stir sticks
  • Metallic paint
  • Paint extender
  • Rugs

Step 1: You will need to place the tarps appropriately and patch any areas of the wall in need of spackling. Be sure to prepare the wall by using your primer.

Step 2: Because lap lines can be more obvious on metallic paint, add an extender to lengthen the time for the paint to dry. This will allow you to smoothen any lap lines.

Step 3: Paint the wall as you usually would, using rollers to cover big areas, while paint brushes can help to cut the corners and edges of the wall.

Step 4: Use rollers to smooth out lap lines — remember to roll in one direction only and to start at the base of the wall going upward.

Step 5: Repeat this process for other walls inside your business.

The type of wood finish you use all comes down to your preferences and requirements. To help you answer this question, here are a few things to consider:

  • Are you looking for hardwood or softwood finishes?
  • Is the wood placed in the interior or exterior of the building?
  • Is it new or old wood?
  • Is it treated or bare wood?
  • What kind of sheen is needed: satin, matte, or gloss?

Once you answer these questions, you should be able to determine the best wood finish to use.

If you’re looking to make wood waterproof, you can choose between varnish, lacquer, or polyurethane as your options.

You can go with three options:

  • For a pour-on finish, choose epoxy resin, since it is the most durable of all the common finishes.
  • If you’re not working in an industrial setting, and want a spray-on option, choose conversion garnish.
  • For a brushed-on finish, choose oil-based polyurethane since it’s much more durable compared to water-based polyurethane.

You can choose from eggshell, flat, or satin paint, as any of these will work well for interior walls. However, gloss and semi-gloss paint will be suitable for use in trim and woodwork. For many businesses, we will often find that eggshell paint provides their walls with a soft glow where it is hit by the light.

This refers to a wide range of processes that are applied to enhance the functions or aesthetics of a product. Compared to other kinds of finishes, industrial processes need to rely on newer technologies, equipment, or materials to ensure that they can withstand heavy usage. Moreover, industrial finishing can be used to change materials such as wood and metal.

There is a wide range of finishes that can be used for industrial businesses. Here are some of the most commonly used options:

  • Satin: Satin paint finishes are popular because they are easy to clean. However, while it can hold up against wear and tear, it won’t be able to take much scrubbing and heavy cleaning. As such, it can be a problem for industrial buildings and warehouses that need regular cleaning.
  • Semi-gloss: Semi-gloss paint finishes provide a subtle shine, making them popular for both industrial and commercial settings. It goes well with moldings and can hold up against heavy scrubbing and cleaning, which is why it’s used in areas that demand top durability.
  • High gloss: For areas that suffer the most wear and tear, it’s best to use high-gloss paint finishes. It’s not only stain-resistant but it also holds up against heavy-duty scrubbing and cleaning. It is a great choice for industrial buildings and warehouses that get a lot of traffic.

If you’re looking for a high-quality finish on concrete, there are things you need to prepare before you pour it on your preferred surface. Here are a few tools you’ll need for the job:

  • A straight board or screed
  • A come-along or square shovel
  • An edging tool
  • A darby or bull float
  • A Fresno or steel trowel
  • A concrete groover

When you have all the tools needed, here are quick steps to a quality finish on concrete:

  • Spreading the concrete: Using your square shovel, push and pull the concrete into the desired areas.
  • Screeding the concrete: Remove any excess concrete and use a straight board or screed to bring the concrete’s surface to proper grade.
  • Floating the surface: To fill voids and fill ridges, use a darby to slightly embed the aggregate.
  • Edging the slab: When all the bleed water is gone, make clean round edges around the perimeter of the slab with an edger.
  • Grooving in the joints: Use a grooving tool to prevent unwanted cracks.
  • Troweling the surface: If you want a broom finish, you can skip this step. But if you’re looking for a hard, smooth, and dense surface, use a Fresno to trowel the surface.
